About Paignton Devon.

Paignton is a very popular family destination with its two superb sandy beach, pier and magnificent promenade.
Paignton is located 3/4 miles South East of Torquay but its popularity is relatively recent. During the early Victorian times it was little more than a farming village that was noted for its cider.
An enjoyable excursion is the Paignton - Dartmouth Steam Railway. This train journey follows the coastline along the bottom of Tor Bay then travels through the wooden slopes along the Dart estuary until it reaches Kingswear. From this station passengers catch the ferry across to Dartmouth. All the rail stock of carriages and locomotives on this line are resplendent in the chocolate and gold livery of Brunel's Great Western Railway and the stations themselves always seem to have train enthusiasts with their cameras etc.
Another very famous attraction is Paignton Zoo opened in 1923 by Herbert Whitley to show his collection the zoo was originally known as Torbay Zoological Gardens. On show were bears, monkeys, bison, zebra, hyena, baboons and many birds. The entry fee was one shilling 5p today for adults and sixpence 2.5p today for children. The zoo is set in beautiful botanic gardens and today is home to over 300 different animal species from all over the world.
Paignton was also the home of Isaac Singer, the millionaire sewing machine manufacturer, In 1875 he was responsible for the building of Oldway Mansion but he died before it was completed. His son Paris finished the work and was instrumental in creating the exuberance of the place. The magnificent ballroom is modelled on Versaille's Hall of Mirrors an it was here that the mistress of Paris, Isadora Duncan would dance in her own unusual style based on classical mythology.
Paignton these days is a lovely place with a level seafront that boasts amusements of all types and a fun filled Pier. There is something for everyone with lively family pubs and cafes that line the promenade and the town centre is just a few minutes walk away. It is also possible to stroll to the harbour and choose one of the many pleasure boat rides that go out across the Bay to either Torquay or Brixham.
