Buckfast Abbey is located on the south eastern edge of Dartmoor and was established as a Benedictine monastery in 1018. In the 12th century it joined the Cistercian Order until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539 resulted in Buckfast Abbey being closed and all its valuables removed. It was over 300 years before the Abbey was bought by a group of monks in 1882 and slowly restored to its former glory. This work took more than 30 years to complete and recently vast improvements have been made to the gardens to create three gardens based on lavender, sensory and physic to provide a place for peace and contemplation. The lavender garden attracts many bees and butterflies whilst the sensory garden is designed like a medieval pleasure garden and is an area for quiet reflection with a chamomile seat surrounded by a honeysuckle and roses. The physic garden is a pleasure for the senses and has more than 200 plants which have been grown in the monastic herb garden.
Today Buckfast Abbey attracts almost half a millions visitors a year from all over the world.. The Abbey is a beautiful building both inside and out, and to complete the visit the amazing stained glass window depicting Jesus at the Last Supper is a must
Admission to the Abbey and gardens is free and there is ample free car parking. There are also facilities for people with wheelchairs
