About Salcombe Devon.

Salcombe is located 3 miles south of Kingsbridge on the A38. It stands at the mouth of the Kingsbridge estuary and because it is sheltered from the west winds by steep hills Salcombe enjoys a mild micro-climate. The estuary itself is an extreme example of a ria as it forms an estuary disproportionate to the size of its river. The Bar across the entrance to the estuary, a shallow spit of sand, that causes the entrance to be nearly impassible on low spring tides in strong southerly winds.
Salcombe like many of the Devon coastal towns once had a thriving fishing industry and it was also the destination for high speed clipper ships that carried first fruits of the West indian pineapple harvest and oranges from the Azores. This trade has now ceased but the harbour is now home to pleasure crafts and a small fishing fleet still operates from Batson Creek. These days Salcombe is used by yachts as a base for cruising the south west coastline and also as a departure point for the Channel Islands and France. Ferries sail from Salcombe to Kingsbridge and to East Portlemouth.
The town at Salcombe is close to the waters edge, narrow alleys branch off at intervals and small quays are dotted along the estuary foreshore. The street themselves are narrow and the buildings seem crammed in and almost have to fight for space. Interesting shops of a high quality make a pleasant if expensive shopping experience. Outside the central area of London, property prices at Salcombe are the second highest in the UK, the highest are at Sandbanks in Poole Dorset
Salcombe is a designated area of outstanding beauty, it is surrounded by tranquil countryside and has a wonderful scenic coastline. Its mild climate and pleasant town make Salcombe a great place for a holiday.
