About Sticklepath Devon.

Sticklepath lies just over 3 miles South East of Okehamptonand the name is derived from the Saxon staecle, meaning steep, The village is on the outermost edge of Dartmoor beside the River Taw. from Sticklepath it is possible to enjoy the delights of the northern reaches of Dartmoor, walking or indeed horse riding along the bridleways and lanes. The highest and most dramatic area of Dartmoor is not far away, High Willhays and Yes Tor rise to height of 2,038 and 2,029 respectively.
Sticklepath is the site of a very interesting archaeological and industrial remains namely Finch Foundry. Started in the 19th century as a water powered forge to produce agricultural and mining hand tools. Finch's Foundry was in production from 1814 to 1960 and was renowned for producing the sharpest edged tools in the West Country. Today regular demonstrations are given still using the three water wheels to drive a very large tilt hammer and grindstone to show how the foundry made the tools. The National Trust now own the foundry and there is a shop and a cafe at the Foundry.
