Widecombe-in-the-Moor is located within the heart of the Dartmoor National Park , its picturesque name is thought to originate from the term Withy-combe which means Willow Valley.
Today tourism is the mainstay of the Widecombe economy. Evidence of this is quickly seen when looking around the village. Within a very small area there are several gift shops one of which is owned by the National Trust , two cafes and two pubs. The tourist attraction at the village stems from Widecombe Fair which is held annually and celebrated by the popular and well known folksong of the same name. Old Uncle Tom Cobley and All has made Widecome famous, its words were first published in 1880. Souvenirs of the characters featured in the song are available at the gift shops and Toby Jugs are produced in large numbers of varying shapes and sizes.
The church of at Widecombe is known as the Cathedral of the Moors because it is so imposing and boasts a 120 foot tower and a comparatively large capacity for such a small village.
There is a good sized car park at the village and many of visitors come to village after enjoying a walk on the moors are surprised what this relatively small place has to offer. One delightful aspects of this rural community is the chance to see Dartmoor Ponies on the village green.
