About: The rock-spined headland of Start Point is clad in bracken and right at the end is the lighthouse. Five ships were wrecked on one awful night in 1891 but now the lighthouse is strategically placed to guard the treacherous rocks.

About Start Point Devon.
Start Point is located to the east of Salcombe in South Devon.
The Directions to Start Point are signposted from the village of Stokenham which is on the A379 from Kingsbridge. The area has often been called one of the most exposed peninsulas on the English Coast and it is indeed a dramatic headland with wonderful views across the wide sweep of Start Bay.
The name Start is thought to originate from the Anglo-Saxon word steort meaning a tail. This is similar to names given to birds with distinctive tails for example the redstart.
When visiting Start Point there is a private car park at the top of the approach road to the lighthouse and it is possible to go on a tour of this building. The Start Point Lighthouse which has guided vessels along the English Channel for over 150 years is one of twenty nine towers designed by James Walker. The lighthouse was built in the gothic style and it is topped by a crenellated parapet. Since its construction, in 1836, the lighthouse has undergone many changes. In 1862 a fog-signalling bell was added but this was quickly replaced by a siren in 1877. In 1989 the erosion of the coast caused part of the lighthouse complex, including the fog signal, to collapse. As a result a lot of the area had to be levelled and retaining walls put in place. The lighthouse was finally automated in 1993.
The rocks between Bolt Tail and Start Point are some of the oldest rocks in Devon. They are known as schists this means that they are rocks which have been altered by intense heat and pressure. Most of the rocks in this area are mica schists which is a shiny rock characterised by the predominance of the flaky mineral mica. The pressure and heat when the rocks were formed have aligned the flakes of mica and made a normally soft mineral into a very hard rock. This type of rock is quite resistant to the forces of erosion and this has strongly influenced the outline of this part of the South Devon coastline.
Start Point as its name seems to suggest is a great place to begin a walk along the South West coast path and it is also a wonderful place to watch the sun go down as the scenery seems to come alive at sunset.
