About Lopwell Dam Devon.

Lopwell Dam is situated three miles from north Plymouth and seven miles from Tavistock at the upper tidal mark on the River Tavy. This area is a wonderful find and its beauty is enjoyed by both local residents and tourists alike. Walking is high on the list of things to do in this area but the area is also very popular with bird watchers.
The low dam and other buildings were built in 1953 but a new water pumping station was added in 1981 and the original pump house will be internally renovated and transformed into an Educational and Arts Centre. The original purpose of the dam was to supply supplementary drinking water to the city of Plymouth. Today it is possible to obtain a fish pass for salmon and at low tide walkers can cross the dam into the woodland.
The area at Lopwell is a designed Local Nature Reserve (LNR) covering an area of approximately five hectares. The site has several different habitats ranging from mudflats to freshwater marsh, grassland to wildflower meadow and saltmarsh. The area is also designated as a Site of Special Scientific interest (SSSI).

Lopwell Dam and its surrounding area has been singled out for the special status by West Devon Borough Council and designated as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR). It is managed by environmental charity South West Lakes Trust, bringing improved accessibility and education to the community.
