About Noss Mayo Devon.

NOSS MAYO is located about 9 miles South East of Plymouth on the south side of a creek from the mouth of the Yealm. On the opposite bank is the village of Newton Ferrers, when its regatta time the friendly rivalry between the two villages is great fun. There are numerous social activities enjoyed by everyone from the children at the village school to the slightly older inhabitants.
Picturesque is the only word to describe Noss Mayo and its setting, it is one the most popular scenes depicted by artists, but the local people seem quite happy to refer to the place as just Noss. The village has coastal paths on three sides and therefore offers a first rate choice of walks. One of the walks is named "The Drive" and can be started from one of three locations, a ferry, during the summer season, operates over a triangular route in order to cater for this part of the South West Coastal path.
A route across the river at low tide is marked, ?Public footpath via Voss tidal? and makes a wonderful link between Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers. Beware the river comes in very quickly when you are not watching and it will be a walk of several miles round the end of the creek to get back to your car.
The church at Noss Mayo is dedicated to St. Peter was built by St. Aubyn in 1882 and there is a chapel-of-ease which was erected in 1840. In 1849 an epidemic of Cholera decimated the population of Noss Mayo when about 50 of them died, and more than 200 were afflicted with the dreadful disease.
One very sharp corner leading out of the village goes by the strange name of Junket corner.
Newton and Noss Village Hall in Noss Mayo was one the winners of a contest to get money from the Big Lottery Fund. Their award was used to update the village hall and to make their local community a better place to live.
