Devils Stone
Place: Shebbear Category: Historic Size: Wallpaper Size About: At Shebbear there is a one tonne lump of rock known as the Devils Stone or Devil's Boulder. This square is a glacial erratic and not from any local rock formation in the area. A local tradition is upheld every year when this stone is turned over by the village bell ringers. According to local superstition the devils stone needs to be turned over every year on November 5th or a disaster will befall on the village. The last year it was not turned on November 5 was during the Second World War as this was considered a bit of fun but after a few days of bad news someone turned it over anyway.Legend has it that the Devil dropped the stone while fighting with god and he lost the battle the stone fell on top of him, flattening him under it Photograph Added: 12th July 2011 |
