About: Inside Barnstaple's pannier market. This market dates back to Saxon times and evolved through Norman times when it was held in the High Street. The present market was built following the Great Cholera Epidemic of 1849, when the outdoor market was closed after a visit by the London based Commissioners for Health due to problems with the outdoor market’s hygiene practices.
