About: The church of St. George at Modbury is mainly of early 14th century but was enlarged in the 15th to early 16th century This fine church houses the effigy of Sir John Champerknowne, a wealthy local man but a carved granite fireplace lintel set in the pavement outside the old White Hart Inn is all that remains of his fine estates. This church is unusual for Devon in that it has a medieval spire.
