About: St Michaels and All Angels church at Great Torrington has an interesting history. Sir Thomas Fairfax imprisoned 200 Royalist prisoners in the church, in 1646, which unknown to him had been used as a gun powder store. This was somehow set alight which resulted in an explosion which caused the destruction of the church and the death of all the prisoners within.
